About the Item

Set of eight high-back "Tre Fusi" (three spindles) chairs in black-stained beechwood, matte finish – Chiavari craftsmanship, Italy 1950s The traditional Chiavari chair has adapted to various trends and styles, bending to the ingenuity of eclectic personalities without ever losing its defining characteristics of lightness and strength. Browsing through 1950s catalogs is a fascinating experience—one cannot help but be captivated by the black-and-white images illustrating the various models crafted by Ligurian artisans. These were designed for a discerning clientele eager for novelty and change yet still deeply appreciative of quality, undeterred by the consumerist winds of the post-war economic boom. Each chair produced during this period was a response to the demand for both quality and innovation, always in harmony with the centuries-old tradition that carried the delicate Ligurian chair from the arcades and narrow alleys of Chiavari to the grand European residences of the 19th century. By the following century, it had become a hallmark of excellence, recognized as a true design piece for modern interiors. Among the many archival images, the "Tre Fusi" model stands out for its refined proportions and meticulous study of form. We are pleased to present this rare set of eight chairs, distinguished by their elegantly turned legs, adorned with the signature interplay of concave and convex shapes. The seat is crafted from finely drawn bamboo cane, carefully handwoven, while the tall, slender backrest lends the chair a strikingly graceful presence. The backrest’s defining feature is the trio of slender, parallel spindles—hence the name "Tre Fusi." The "fuso" (spindle) was an essential wooden tool used in traditional hand-spinning techniques. Natural fibers were twisted using this small, tapered rod to produce an even thread. The "Tre Fusi" chair pays homage to this deeply rooted craft, seamlessly blending the cultural heritage of textile production with the rich legacy of Chiavari chair-making. Fully restored and finished in an elegant matte black, this exceptional set of "Tre Fusi" chairs is ready to furnish contemporary spaces while continuing to write new chapters in the history of design and social tradition.
