About the Item
MID-CENTURY BRASS AND VELVET DINING CHAIRS
In manner of Maison Jansen, ca. 1950 set of eight
37" H x 16 3/4" W x 17 1/4" D x 18" H to seat
A rare and sleek set of dining chairs designed in solid brass and crushed blue velvet in the 1950s, they echo the taste of the French Neoclassical designs as an entirely reimagined interpretation of the angular Louis XVI style. The shield-backs are cleverly attached using custom slotted screws in the backs, the gadroon-molded crest rail flanked on either side by raised finials. The seats are comfortable and plush, raised over a simple shaped apron with sand-cast rosettes over the front legs.
The simple streamlined profile is rich and restrained at the same time - the elegant design is flexibly incorporated into both the modern interior as well as an Old World or antique style with equal parts traditional and contemporary.
Condition: All upholstery with wear and use indicators, discoloration and blemish. Depending on your taste, they remain perfectly enjoyable exactly as-is, but also are a relatively easy set to have reupholstered as the chair back and seat separate with a few screws. One chair finial is bent. Several cast rosettes are missing from the knees. Brass has an attractive patina with tarnish and discoloration as expected with time. Sturdy and comfortable.
