About the Item

Adams, Chippendale, the “Louies” and the Egg Chair have all had their day, but the true "people's chair," due to its affordability and widespread use across social strata, is the Windsor. It’s as sought after today as it was 250 years ago when veterans of the only war to defeat the armies of the British Empire rested their weary bones in the evenings for ale and a pipe. The design is endlessly adaptable. It’s at home today for its sculptural shape in a minimalist’s Denver town home as it might be for its sublime simplicity in a Maine lakeside log cabin. This antique set of six features the Thumb Back design. The crest rail at the top of the back spindles offers a distinct, rounded yet slightly flattened or sculpted shape. These rails offered an attractive space for a distant craftsman to apply a faux finish, one that imitated costly figured tiger maple wood. The back’s spindles are joined into the sculpted saddle-shaped seat, the better to linger after dinner for intriguing discussions. The seats are outlined in a black stripe, an ornamentation which was deployed below to emphasize the “bamboo” style of the turned and splayed legs joined into the bottom of the seat, which is further supported by “bamboo” cross stretchers. Sadly, not free to good home.
