Set of Six Haagse School Oak Dining Chairs with Velour Seats, Netherlands 1930s

About the Item

In 1920, the term "Nieuwe Haagse School" was first mentioned by the architect C.J. Blaauw. The style blossomed between 1925 and 1940, and brought uniformity to the cityscape. In furniture design, the style is characterized by symmetry and draws a great deal of influence from Berlage's rationalism, the Arts and Crafts movement, and De Stijl. This set of dining chairs are a true testament to the principles of the design era. The Nieuwe Haagse School - which was part of Art Deco - is more luxurious than the style of the Amsterdamse School of the 1910s, but also makes use of strict and clean lines, as these chairs showcase. While the painters of The Haagse School generally made use of relatively somber colours (which is why it was sometimes called the Gray School), this can hardly be said about its furniture designers. One thing that connects Haagse School furniture is the appreciation of beautiful, quality wood and artisanal woodworking. These dining chairs have stunning solid oak frames with geometric and symmetrical angles, most apparent in the square backs and legs. While dining chairs are generally more utilitarian types of seating, this set of six still manages to look cosy and warm thanks to the upholstered seats. The textured fabric is not only elegant, it also accentuates the luxurious look of the wood. Despite the beautiful rust-coloured upholstery of the seats, the main decorative element remains the beauty of the wood, with deep colour hues and grain. The texture of the fabric complements the oak frames beautifully, creating a perfect balance of comfort and style. The attention to detail of the cabinetmaker is truly evident, which makes them a lovely and timeless addition to any interior style. The clean lines and symmetrical shape of this set of dining chairs is ideal to give any style of living space an Art Deco touch. These chairs not only stand as a testament to the Haagse School's legacy, but also as an iconic representation of Dutch design, where simplicity and quality are held in the highest regard, making them ideal for design enthusiasts.
