About the Item

A beautiful Vintage set of fourteen solid mahogany Chippendale Revival dining chairs, dating from the mid 20th Century. They have been crafted from hand carved solid flame mahogany each with a yoke shaped top rail, a pierced and carved splat back with stuffover seat and upholstered in green leather. The chairs are elegantly raised on square legs united by a cross stretcher. The chairs are a rich mahogany colour with a striking grain and good patina. THE BOTANICAL NAME FOR THE MAHOGANY THAT THIS ITEM IS MADE OF IS SWIETENIA MACROPHYLLA AND THIS TYPE OF MAHOGANY IS NOT SUBJECT TO CITES REGULATION AND DOES NOT CONTAIN ANY RESTRICTED MATERIALS. Dimensions in cm: Height 97 cm x Width 54 cm x Depth 53 cm Height 49 cm - Seat height Dimensions in inches: Height 3 foot, 2 inches x Width 1 foot, 9 inches x Depth 1 foot, 9 inches Height 1 foot, 7 inches - Seat height Flame Mahogany Thomas Sheraton - 18th century furniture designer, once characterized mahogany as "best suited to furniture where strength is demanded as well as a wood that works up easily, has a beautiful figure and polishes so well that it is an ornament to any room in which it may be placed." Matching his words to his work, Sheraton designed much mahogany furniture. The qualities that impressed Sheraton are particularly evident in a distinctive pattern of wood called "flame mahogany." The flame figure in the wood is revealed by slicing through the face of the branch at the point where it joins another element of the tree. Thomas Chippendale (1718 - 1779) was a London cabinet-maker and furniture designer in the mid-Georgian, English Rococo, and Neoclassical styles. In 1754 he published a book of his designs, titled The Gentleman and Cabinet Maker's Director. The designs are regarded as reflecting the current London fashion for furniture for that period and were used by other cabinet makers outside London. The Director shows four main styles: 1. English with deep carving, 2. elaborate French rococo in the style of Louis XV furniture, 3. Chinese style with latticework and lacquer, and 4. Gothic with pointed arches, quatrefoils and fret-worked legs. Chippendale was much more than just a cabinet maker, he was an interior designer who advised on soft furnishings and even the colour a room should be painted. Chippendale often took on large-scale commissions from aristocratic clients. Twenty-six of these commissions have been identified. Our reference: A3986
