About the Item

Beech wood living room set composed of a daybed with two cushions, two armchairs, and two straight back chairs. The wood framing of each piece is sculpted with floral motifs in Art Nouveau style. One of the arms of the daybed can be lowered or removed, creating the possibility of a guest bed. The daybed is set on four fluted and tapered legs. The front legs of the armchairs and straight back chairs are fluted and tapered like the daybed, but their rear legs are sabered. All of the upholstery fabric is from the period, in blue with a diamond pattern. The daybed's mattress cover is removable. The ensemble has been conserved well with some signs of use. The French designer and decorator Paul Follot (1877-1941) was an Art Déco traditionalist heavily influenced by Art Nouveau. He worked from 1901 to 1903 for La Maison Moderne, a gallery run by the art dealer Julius Meier-Graefe in Paris between 1899 and 1903, which sold both publications and contemporary creations. Follot made objects of silver, textiles and bronze as well as jewelry for Meier-Graefe. In 1903, Follot co-founded L’Art dans Tout (Art in Everything), a group of artists whose Mission was to preserve French craftsmanship traditions against the onslaught of industrialization. Follot was not merely a designer, but also professor of upper-level decorative arts courses in Paris, circa 1930.
