About the Item

‘Romantica’ Living room set by Piero Ranzani for Elam in dark Wood and Walnut, Italy, 1950’s What stands out are the straight lines of the wood construction against the rounded shapes of the cushions and the seating. Some nice detailing can be found back in the distinct shapes of the multilayered legs in different sorts of darker hardwood and walnut and a metal foot that forms a small ridge around the leg. Sometimes the edges of the legs are cut out diagonally. What also stands out is the minimal backrest construction that gives very good support because of two strong metal bended plate construction resulting in a good mix of materials: metal, wood and fabric to soften everything out. Altogether a very interesting living room set mainly because of its minimal lines and shapes, almost Artifort-kind of curves in the cushioning....(but then in the 50's) and a very good mix of materials. Piero Ranzani was just as for example Gio Ponti one of the first ones using metal in this way giving room for constructions to be executed more minimalistic leaving room for new opportunities such as putting emphazis on the fabric and the cushioning in this case. That's why we would advise to reupholster in a very high quality wool such as Pierre Frey and then a lightly coloured version. Would work very well with the dark wood and the fresh metal but also high quality because the fabric is so very well visible. The sofa is in desperate need of new upholstery and cushioning (without loosing those beautiful curves of course....).
