1940s Bentwood Armchairs by Koželka & Kropáček with Original Upholstery – Prague, Czechoslovakia
This exceptional pair of bentwood armchairs was designed in the 1940s by celebrated Czech modernists Karel Koželka and Antonín Kropáček, whose award-winning work helped define early post-war European design. Crafted in Prague, these sculptural chairs are a stunning marriage of form, function, and artistry.
Each armchair features a flowing bentwood frame in dark-stained beech, with dramatically curved armrests that highlight the designers’ mastery of the bentwood technique. The original patinated finish has aged beautifully, revealing warm undertones and characterful wear consistent with time and use.
Upholstered in its original 1940s fabric, a vibrant coral-orange with an intricate ivory vine motif, the upholstery adds rare period authenticity. A delicate ivory piping further outlines the chair’s silhouette. While the upholstery remains intact and visually compelling, we recommend reupholstery before use for both comfort and longevity.
These armchairs exemplify the restrained elegance of mid-century Czech design, blending Bauhaus influence with regional craft. Koželka and Kropáček’s furniture was recognized with a Silver Medal at the 1946 Milan Triennale, affirming their place in international design history.
