About the Item

This is arguably one of the rarest and most special furniture works of American modernism. It is Davis Allen's work for Skidmore, Owings, and Merrill (SOM Design), conceived of for the Inland Steel building in Chicago. The building was completed in 1957 and led by SOM Architects Bruce Graham and Walter Netsch. Davis Allen was responsible for much of the interiors and furniture works. This steel mesh lounge chair is one of the most unique and special works that was designed by the firm throughout its history and its believed that there may be as few as eight of them (ever produced). This example was produced by Treitel Gratz in stainless steel. It is upholstered in fabric by Jack Lenor Larsen. The past owner purchased it in the 1990s from The Armony Show in NY. The chair measures 29 inches deep, 27 inches wide, and 32 inches high. This piece does show wear from previous use, but overall is in very good to excellent vintage condition. Please see photos.
