About the Item

This elegant French armchair, dating from the 19th century, features a distinctive “chapeau de gendarme” backrest, a hallmark of refined Louis XVI style. The carved beechwood frame retains its original patinated lacquer finish in soft grey tones, enhancing the fine neoclassical details. The top rail curves gracefully into angular corners, framing a padded back upholstered in a rich gold and cream damask, with a scrolling floral pattern in raised velvet texture. The generously padded seat, matching upholstered armrests, and gilt braid trim display gentle wear consistent with age and use, adding to the chair’s authentic charm. The arm supports are delicately carved with acanthus leaves and end in small scrolls, flowing into square rosettes at the junction with the seat rail. The tapered, fluted legs are surmounted by carved floral blocks, another characteristic Louis XVI motif. The rear of the chair is also upholstered, allowing it to be placed freely within a room.
