About the Item

Art Deco Lounge Chair by C.A. Lion Cachet, 1930 — Reupholstered in Purple Velvet An exceptional Art Deco lounge chair designed by renowned Dutch designer Carel Adolph Lion Cachet, circa 1930. This striking armchair is a rare example of Dutch modernist design, featuring a sculptural frame in oak and jatoba wood, newly reupholstered in a luxurious deep purple velvet that beautifully complements the warmth of the wood. C.A. Lion Cachet (1864–1945) was a pivotal figure in early 20th-century Dutch decorative arts. Originally trained as a woodcarver, he became widely known for his bold, integrated design approach, uniting architecture, furniture, textiles, and graphic art. He was particularly influential in the interior design of Dutch ocean liners, where his distinctive Art Deco aesthetic flourished. This chair reflects Lion Cachet’s signature style: refined geometric carving, impeccable craftsmanship, and a balance of modern form with rich cultural influences—often drawn from Dutch colonial motifs. Wear consistent with age and use. Charles André Lion Cachet (1864-1945) was a Dutch furniture designer and architect who worked during the Art Nouveau and Art Deco periods. He is known for his innovative designs that combined the use of exotic woods, metals, and glass, often with intricate inlay work and geometric patterns. Lion Cachet studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Amsterdam and later worked in Paris and London, where he was exposed to the latest design trends and techniques. He returned to Amsterdam in the late 1890s and established his own furniture workshop, where he produced his most iconic designs. His furniture designs were influenced by a range of styles, including the Arts and Crafts movement, Japanese art, and Art Nouveau. His designs often featured strong geometric shapes, intricate details, and a sophisticated use of materials. Lion Cachet's designs were highly sought after by collectors and wealthy clients, and his work has been exhibited in several museums and galleries, including the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. Today, Lion Cachet's furniture is highly collectible and valued for its timeless elegance and innovative design. His legacy continues to inspire furniture designers and collectors around the world.
