Asymmetrical Fluid Shape European Lounge Chair, Europe 1950s

About the Item

Modern style is firmly rooted in the design output of the early-to-mid-1900s, and is characterised by clear lines and simple colours. It promotes sleek, clean shapes and eliminates decorative additions that only served as embellishment. Scandinavian and wider European mid-century modern design portray a philosophy guided by functionality and simplicity, fitting right into the era’s ethos. The shape of this chair prioritises its user, maintaining the focus on authentic simplicity, elegance, and most of all, comfort. This is most visible in the chair's round, welcoming body and choice of all-over upholstery. Moreover, this lounge chair is set apart from a classic slipper chair by the curved shape of the backrest, almost “hugging” its sitter. Not only is the chair well thought-out from a functional perspective, but the asymmetrical shape of the backrest showcases a uniqueness achieved purely through the simplicity of its lines - a mark of an expert cabinetmaker. The chair’s visual appeal and interest is enhanced by the seven tufted buttons on the backrest, which are asymmetrically placed towards the left side, balancing out the look. The off-white, ivory fabric adds a tactile dimension through its textured appearance, while the short, tapered legs add a modern feel, balancing out the voluptuous body. Rounded lines, unexpected curvature and innovative shape define the design of this chair. Through the uncomplicated, yet distinctively unique design choices, this lounge chair maximises comfort and function while putting an emphasis on elegance and refinement. The harmony brought forth by the expert craftsmanship, the material choices and the overall design make this chair ideal for any modern interior and style. Condition: In good vintage condition. European Mid-Century Modern Upholstered Lounge Chairs, Europe, circa 1950s

Mid-Century Modern, a design movement devoted to timeless functionalism established itself in the post-war period with furniture that appealed to the senses. Furniture design was guided by the famous maxim: “Form follows function.” For midcentury designers, materials were used for their own distinct; often a piece of furniture would combine only two materials or colours – creating tension and harmony without fuss or superfluous ornament and these fully upholstered lounge chairs are perfect examples of this sentiment. The duality of two materials and colour scheme create an elegant, self-supporting, and enticingly functional design. The combination of solid wood and high-quality upholstery is traditional in mid-century design for a good reason. The two materials complement each other by highlighting their unique material qualities. This pair falls into the category of the so-called biomorphic midcentury: furniture that relished in organic, curved, smooth surfaces, design that was moulded into the shapes of natural occurrences, and which was a lively contrast to the more austere machine aesthetic...
