Erich Dieckmann Club Chair in Restored Museal Manner from 1926/1927
About the Item
This armchair by Erich Dieckmann, a pivotal figure in the Bauhaus movement, is a stunning example of modernist design from the early 20th century. Dieckmann, a graduate of the Bauhochschule Weimar and head of the carpentry workshop, was known for his ability to fuse geometric forms with exceptional craftsmanship. This armchair reflects his deep commitment to functionality and simplicity, principles that defined the Bauhaus era.
The frame of the chair is crafted from rare and valuable bog oak, a material that adds both historical significance and a unique richness to the piece. Combined with a mix of beech, alder, or pine, the frame is carefully stained in oak or bog oak tones and finished with a transparent lacquer, allowing the beauty of the wood grain to shine through. The seat and backrest are supported by laced springs, with the frame made from tow and horsehair, ensuring both durability and comfort.
The upholstery is the original fabric, a testament to the chair’s authenticity, further confirmed by the rare stamps found on the underside of the seat frame—one from the State Bauhochschule Weimar and the other, Dieckmann’s personal mark, “ED.” These brand stamps provide further provenance, highlighting this chair as a genuine and significant example of Dieckmann’s design legacy.
True to the Bauhaus principles of “form follows function,” this armchair offers both aesthetic appeal and practical comfort, showcasing Dieckmann’s mastery of blending craftsmanship with modernist design. Its clean lines, geometric form, and carefully selected materials make it a timeless piece that seamlessly fits into both historical and contemporary interiors. As a key artifact from the Bauhaus movement, it not only serves as a functional chair but also as a piece of design history, representing the shift toward modernism that defined the early 20th century.
