European Easy Chairs Upholstered in Wool, Europe ca 1950s

About the Item

The period from the 1940s through the 1960s was a high point for European furniture makers. This pair of easy chairs were created during this period of creative overflow, with a typically European mid-century modern style. The chairs’ simple and functional design, starting from the wooden frames’ symmetric lines to the visible joints and screws, is highly representative of the principles of European mid-century design. The frames with box stretchers assure stability and comfort, while offering visual interest as well. The back stretchers are arranged higher than the rest, while the front legs stand further from each other than the back ones. These subtle structural elements engage the eyes and give these easy chairs plenty of personality. The wooden frames appear to be firmly holding the back- and seat rests, which is even more apparent thanks to the soft wool upholstery. The light wool further highlights the round edges of the seat- and back rests, contrasting nicely with the dark stained and straight lines of the frames. These models’ main objective was evidently functionality. However, as it can be expected from a mid-century design pieces, the aesthetic dimension does not fall behind. The quality of the design is matched by the outstanding workmanship of the manufacturer. The clean and simple design of this pair of easy chairs is complimented by the eye-catching wool upholstery. European Mid-Century Modern Upholstered Lounge Chairs, Europe, circa 1950s
Located in Utrecht, NL
Mid-Century Modern, a design movement devoted to timeless functionalism established itself in the post-war period with furniture that appealed to the senses. Furniture design was guided by the famous maxim: “Form follows function.” For midcentury designers, materials were used for their own distinct; often a piece of furniture would combine only two materials or colours – creating tension and harmony without fuss or superfluous ornament and these fully upholstered lounge chairs are perfect examples of this sentiment. The duality of two materials and colour scheme create an elegant, self-supporting, and enticingly functional design. The combination of solid wood and high-quality upholstery is traditional in mid-century design for a good reason. The two materials complement each other by highlighting their unique material qualities. This pair falls into the category of the so-called biomorphic midcentury: furniture that relished in organic, curved, smooth surfaces, design that was moulded into the shapes of natural occurrences, and which was a lively contrast to the more austere machine aesthetic...
