About the Item

These unique, elegant lounge chairs take stylistic inspiration from both French period and Italian modern seating designs. The design incorporates beauty, functionality, and simplicity in a way that is characteristic of the mid 20th century. Maintaining the simplicity of design while offering plenty of interesting details is the strong suit of this pair. The bodies rest on intricate wooden bases with gently curved legs that recall historical styles such as the cabriole. Yet, the legs are much shorter and the seats lower which is an essentially mid-century characteristic. The clean lines are broken with curved, smooth angles added for accent. The fully upholstered bodies accentuate these curves, especially on the arms that fold outwards. The gentle curves are also present on the top of the backrests and on the wooden bases, creating a cohesive, balanced look. There is a delicate feminity about these chairs that is exuded through the friendly and round shapes completed by the light fabric. These lounge chairs have a cosy modern style, modelled on the European furniture of the 19th century, including the round edges, the generous seat cushions, and sculpted legs. Clean lines, gentle curves and a shared modernist sensibility make them perfect for contemporary spaces. Condition: In good vintage condition. Wear consistent with age and use. The chairs have been reupholstered recently in a premium fabric. Each of our items can be re-upholstered by our in-house atelier in a fabric of choice. Please reach out for more information. European Mid-Century Modern Upholstered Lounge Chairs, Europe, circa 1950s
Located in Utrecht, NL
Mid-Century Modern, a design movement devoted to timeless functionalism established itself in the post-war period with furniture that appealed to the senses. Furniture design was guided by the famous maxim: “Form follows function.” For midcentury designers, materials were used for their own distinct; often a piece of furniture would combine only two materials or colours – creating tension and harmony without fuss or superfluous ornament and these fully upholstered lounge chairs are perfect examples of this sentiment. The duality of two materials and colour scheme create an elegant, self-supporting, and enticingly functional design. The combination of solid wood and high-quality upholstery is traditional in mid-century design for a good reason. The two materials complement each other by highlighting their unique material qualities. This pair falls into the category of the so-called biomorphic midcentury: furniture that relished in organic, curved, smooth surfaces, design that was moulded into the shapes of natural occurrences, and which was a lively contrast to the more austere machine aesthetic...
