About the Item

In the midst of the swinging 1960s, a remarkable design style emerged, a kind of mature mid-century modernism that captivated the essence of the era's design trends. These lounge chairs, mixing classic materials and shapes, remain exemplary representations of the innovative European furniture design that characterized the period. The 1960s was a time of radical change, and this dynamism was reflected in the furniture design of the era as well. European designers sought to break away from the traditional and embrace bold, cosy shapes. These lounge chairs are no exception. Their stylish form is characterized by open, inviting lines, and soft, round edges. This design approach emphasized comfort and relaxation, a response to the desire for a more laid-back lifestyle and a rejection of the stiffness of earlier decades. The dark stained oak legs add a touch of sophistication and warmth to the chairs. What makes these legs particularly noteworthy is their functionality: gently splayed, they not only contribute to the chairs' stability but also provide stark visual contrast to the soft, textured bouclé upholstery. The combination of oak's natural beauty and the geometric allure of the bouclé fabric created an enchanting juxtaposition. These lounge chairs encapsulate the spirit of the '60s by merging form and function, celebrating the liberating spirit of the time. They represent the heyday of mid-century modern design with a retro tinge mainly thanks to the large tufted buttons that adorn the backs. Even today, these chairs remain timeless icons, preserving the unique essence of a transformative period in the history of furniture design. Condition: In good vintage condition. European Mid-Century Modern Upholstered Lounge Chairs, Europe, circa 1950s
Located in Utrecht, NL
Mid-Century Modern, a design movement devoted to timeless functionalism established itself in the post-war period with furniture that appealed to the senses. Furniture design was guided by the famous maxim: “Form follows function.” For midcentury designers, materials were used for their own distinct; often a piece of furniture would combine only two materials or colours – creating tension and harmony without fuss or superfluous ornament and these fully upholstered lounge chairs are perfect examples of this sentiment. The duality of two materials and colour scheme create an elegant, self-supporting, and enticingly functional design. The combination of solid wood and high-quality upholstery is traditional in mid-century design for a good reason. The two materials complement each other by highlighting their unique material qualities. This pair falls into the category of the so-called biomorphic midcentury: furniture that relished in organic, curved, smooth surfaces, design that was moulded into the shapes of natural occurrences, and which was a lively contrast to the more austere machine aesthetic...
