About the Item
The Italian furniture and interior designer, Federico Munari is known as a master of elegantly organic forms. His seating models - including these easy chairs - were created to highlight the spirit of rebirth of post-war furniture design, characterized by clean lines and a free spirit.
These individualistic easy chairs reflect the mid-century Italian furniture style that was defined by unique design, perfect execution, and exclusivity. This delightfully eccentric pair is quite simplistic in its design, featuring a combination of round, shell-like bodies and slender, tapered wooden legs. The rotund bodies embrace the sitter comfortably with their sloping arms that blend into the bodies, which creates a cosy and open look. Then there is the stylish, striped upholstery fully covering the bodies that immediately sets these chairs apart. The fabric choice in combination with the round lines of the design and adds just enough edge. The cushions are nested into the chairs, therefore they follow the smooth and unitary aesthetic. Additionally, the backs feature three tufted buttons each, breaking the stripes cleverly. The simple but effective shape is further supported by the light upholstery that is elegantly restrained while having enough textural variety to enhance the round forms. The chairs are mounted on tapered wood legs, thanks to which they appear light and spacious despite their sizeable bodies. The stained colour stands out beautifully against the upholstery and emphasizes the slim, conical shape, complementing the chairs’ unique look while also serving their functional role.
Though many mid-century Italian designers may not have the name recognition as some of their Scandinavian counterparts, they were integral to developing a modern aesthetic in Europe. The appreciation for their contribution is still growing today, making outstanding Italian pieces like these chairs highly sought after.

European Mid-Century Modern Upholstered Lounge Chairs, Europe, circa 1950s
Located in Utrecht, NL
Mid-Century Modern, a design movement devoted to timeless functionalism established itself in the post-war period with furniture that appealed to the senses. Furniture design was guided by the famous maxim: “Form follows function.”
For midcentury designers, materials were used for their own distinct; often a piece of furniture would combine only two materials or colours – creating tension and harmony without fuss or superfluous ornament and these fully upholstered lounge chairs are perfect examples of this sentiment. The duality of two materials and colour scheme create an elegant, self-supporting, and enticingly functional design. The combination of solid wood and high-quality upholstery is traditional in mid-century design for a good reason. The two materials complement each other by highlighting their unique material qualities. This pair falls into the category of the so-called biomorphic midcentury: furniture that relished in organic, curved, smooth surfaces, design that was moulded into the shapes of natural occurrences, and which was a lively contrast to the more austere machine aesthetic...
