About the Item

Lounge chair, velvet, oak, metal, France, 1920s This 1920s French armchair is a striking example of the Art Deco movement, but it also carries a strong undercurrent of the Amsterdamse School, especially in its sculptural quality and heavy, grounded presence. Made of oak and upholstered in deep blue velvet, the chair combines elegance with solidity. The most distinctive feature is the carved oak frame that forms a bold U-shape along the arms, giving the chair a sense of enclosure and structure, almost like a piece of architecture. The wood is thick and visibly worked, with clear vertical carvings at the base that recall the careful detailing often seen in Amsterdamse School furniture. These lines are minimal but deliberate, introducing a kind of rhythm that plays well against the curves of the structure. The proportions of the chair are unusual and expressive. The backrest tapers sharply upward like a peak, while the armrests flow outward in a continuous arc before curving down toward the base. The metal rims run along the perimeter of the seat, emphasizing the graceful concave shape. The platform of the chair is substantial and firmly rooted, slightly stepped and tapering gently toward the floor. The blue velvet brings softness and depth to the otherwise architectural design. Its matte texture and rich tone contrast nicely with the dark, heavy oak. Kindly note that the chair is in good, used condition. The fabric contains stains and tears along the rims. Reupholstery can be done before shipping by our experienced craftspeople in our own in-house restoration atelier. With high attention for the original, they make sure every piece retains its value and is ready for the many years to come. We kindly ask you to contact our design experts for further information about the endless possibilities our restoration and upholstery atelier has to offer. Of course, a locally organized reupholstery is possible as well.
