About the Item

A true pair of artifacts! This pair of large Shaker style, loungey, arm chairs was designed and built by Gordon Russell around 1904 in Broadway, England. The chairs feature incredible, hand built, peg construction, and are crafted with the highest choice, handpicked wood--the frames are oak and the arms, we believe, are hickory. The seats are made of woven pig leather, which has lots of crazy texture. The chairs are totally identical aside from the arms--one chair has a solid block form arm, while the other is slightly carved out for a sleeker look. Arm arms have stunning, wedged through tenon joinery. Both sets of arms are made from fabulous, old growth hickory, with tons of character in the form of swirling grain and knots, giving a sort of "live edge" feel. The chairs are in wonderful condition for their age, with lots and lots of smooth , smooth patina. They have been freshly reglued and are solid and sturdy, though they may creek slightly, as they're 120 years old. The original leather is in nice condition with some imperfections: a leather strap has been repaired, and there is some cosmetic wear, but overall it is so beautiful and unique. Truly a special, one of a kind pair of hand made lounge chairs from the early 1900s.
