These individualistic chairs possess a playful and stylish look that Italian Modern furniture is beloved and coveted for. Defined by the stylish silhouette of the design covered in a characteristic, geometric patterned fabric, perfect execution, and exclusivity, this pair is the definition of an accent piece. Italian mid-century furniture and interior designers are known as masters of elegantly organic forms. Seating models - including these lounge chairs - were created to highlight the spirit of rebirth of post-war furniture design characterized by clean lines and a free spirit. This delightfully eccentric pair is quite understated and well measured in its design, featuring a combination of round, shell-like bodies and slender, tapered wood legs. The rotund bodies embrace the sitter comfortably with their sloping armrests, which creates a cosy feel and look. The seat cushions are nested into the chairs, therefore they follow the smooth and unitary aesthetic. The simple but effective shape is also in support of the eccentric upholstery that cleverly enhances the round forms with the geometric pattern in black and white. The chairs are mounted on tapered wood legs thanks to which they appear light and spacious despite their sizeable bodies. The stained dark colour stands out beautifully against the upholstery and emphasize the slim shape. While the unique fabric grabs the attention, establishing the chairs’ unique look, it also serves its functional role by providing great sitting comfort. Though many mid-century Italian designers may not have the name recognition as some of their Scandinavian counterparts, they were integral to developing a modern aesthetic in Europe. Mid-Century Modern, a design movement devoted to timeless functionalism established itself in the post-war period with furniture that appealed to the senses. Furniture design was guided by the famous maxim: “Form follows function.” For midcentury designers, materials were used for their own distinct; often a piece of furniture would combine only two materials or colours – creating tension and harmony without fuss or superfluous ornament and these fully upholstered lounge chairs are perfect examples of this sentiment. The duality of two materials and colour scheme create an elegant, self-supporting, and enticingly functional design. The combination of solid wood and high-quality upholstery is traditional in mid-century design for a good reason.
