About the Item

Josef Hoffmann “Cabinett” Lounge Chair, 1903 – Produced by Wittmann Möbelwerkstätten, Austria An exceptional and iconic example of early 20th-century Viennese design, this Cabinett Lounge Chair, originally conceived by Josef Hoffmann in 1903, is a masterwork of geometric clarity and refined craftsmanship. Produced by the prestigious Wittmann Möbelwerkstätten in Austria, this piece stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of Hoffmann’s design principles and the impeccable production standards of Wittmann. This lounge chair features its original sky-blue mohair velvet upholstery, adorned with subtle floral relief motifs that elegantly echo Hoffmann’s love for ornamentation within a rationalist framework. The upholstery remains in excellent condition, retaining its vibrant color and luxurious texture—rare for a chair of this vintage. Set within a structured black lacquered wood frame with bold right angles and a box-like form, the chair exudes modernist sophistication while maintaining a warm, inviting presence. A distinctive fusion of form and function. We currently have two pieces available, offering a rare opportunity to acquire a pair of these historic and beautifully preserved chairs. Dimensions: Height: 77 cm (30.3 in.) Width: 68 cm (26.8 in.) Depth: 68 cm (26.8 in.) Seat Height: 46 cm (18.1 in.) About the Designer Josef Hoffmann (1870–1956) was a pioneering Austrian architect and designer, co-founder of the Vienna Secession and later the Wiener Werkstätte. Known for his exacting geometric style, Hoffmann merged artistic craftsmanship with modern industrial production, shaping the course of modern design. His works are celebrated for their elegant balance of austerity and decoration, making him one of the most influential figures in 20th-century design. About the Manufacturer Wittmann Möbelwerkstätten, founded in 1896 and still family-owned, has long been synonymous with the finest Austrian craftsmanship. Renowned for their collaborations with leading designers, Wittmann is the sole authorized producer of Josef Hoffmann’s furniture designs today, ensuring historic accuracy and exceptional quality. Condition: Excellent vintage condition. Upholstery is original and well-preserved. Minor wear consistent with age. A rare and museum-quality acquisition for collectors of Austrian modernism and admirers of authentic Wiener Werkstätte design. Available as a pair. Colors may slightly vary due to photographic lighting sources or your monitor settings. Wear consistent with age and use. The chair will be shipped insured overseas in a custom made wooden crate. Cost of insured transport to the US is Euro 975 crate included when we take care of the shipping which we highly recommend.
