About the Item

Mid-Century Teak and Cane Lounge Chairs from France, 1950s These mid-century French armchairs combine visually stunning structural design, expert caning techniques, and high-quality materials. The chair's angles are visually striking, reminiscent of the chairs created by Swiss architect Pierre Jeanneret for Chandigarh in India. In the 1950s, a design renaissance in France was influenced by materials and technology developments after the war. French designers, often also architects, focused on functionality and quality, resulting in sculptural models like this armchair. These chairs feature a gorgeous teak structure and cane panels, with clean, sleek forms and no decoration, characteristic of a style commonly referred to as reconstructivism. Reconstructivist design builds upon deconstructionist models and techniques, adapting them to classic themes and structures to create works of genuine emotion and significance. The body features octagonal mesh cane webbing, an elegant material that enhances quality and complements the teak wood. Cane webbing is strong enough to support the weight of a sitting person, but its production requires a lot of labor, attention, and craftsmanship. The original cane panels are in excellent condition, confirming this armchair's outstanding quality and its maker's skill. These armchairs are in good vintage condition with wear consistent with age and use, featuring the original cane panels and a beautiful wood patina. "Please note that we have 2 sets available."
