About the Item

The 1990s saw a revival of Scandinavian design as ‘New Nordic Design’ with the resurgence of an appetite for mid-century modernism that had been perfected in Denmark in the post-war era. There is a warmth to wooden Danish furniture that you don’t find in tubular-steel framed Bauhaus designs. In December 2016, the term "hygge" was so popular that the New York Times ran an explainer on the concept. This ideal of comfortable warmth can be expressed in many ways, including furniture and thus, this beautiful easy chair. With a clear preoccupation with geometry, this model’s outstanding architectural frame speaks of the mastery of the designer and of the producer. All the decorative elements are in service of functionality, including the rope backrests piercing through the elongated legs, the appealing angles, and triangular side profile. The refined linearity lays at the basis of this piece’s the overall aesthetic, with crisp, architectural lines. On the decoration front, the seat is upholstered in a rich dark fabric, which complements the light-coloured wood and rope. The material choice is quintessentially Danish, focusing on neutral colours and natural materials. Crafted with precision from solid wood, finished with a clear attention to detail and care for the aesthetic dimension as well, this "MG31" chair is sure to stand the test of time thanks to both its visual quality and construction. Condition: In good vintage condition. Wear consistent with age and use. Minor marks and scratches on wood. The chair comes with its original upholstery or has been reupholstered by a previous owner. Easy Chair by Jørgen Høj and Poul Kjærholm for Thorald Madsen, Denmark 1952
By Thorald Madsens Snedkeri, Poul Kjærholm, Jorgen Hoj
Located in Utrecht, NL
Designed in 1952 by Jørgen Høj and Poul Kjærholm for Thorald Madsen Cabinetmakers, this easy chair in ash and flag halyard is a true modernist masterpiece. Removing everything that was not strictly necessary for its shape and function, the designers created a geometrical and transparent work, that is subdued, yet attention drawing at the same time. The work was presented at the Copenhagen Cabinetmakers' Guild Exhibition at the Designmuseum Danmark in 1952, the only time Kjærholm participated in this event. Although the design was daring for its time, it was welcomed as a breath of fresh air at the exhibition. As a reviewer wrote at the time:? "The most ‘progressive’ interior… was no doubt the one made by architects Jørgen Høj and Poul Kjærholm in collaboration with Thorald Madsen. {…} One has to admit that it provided a refreshing change from the pervading solemnity. It is the duty of all exhibitions...
