Organic Lounge chair designed by Hans Bellmann for Straessle & Soehne 1950ies

About the Item

Sitwell lounge chair designed by Hans Bellman for Strässle Söhne & Co, ca. 1950. This lounge chair with it‘s elegant organic shape is designed by Hans Bellman for Strässle Söhne & Co in the early 1950s. Bellmann was one of the first designers in Europe who began experimenting with fiberglass molding. This then new technique would allow the invention of free flowing, very organic shapes and also the construction of the thin and elegant outer profiles, that you can find in the shape of the arm rests. In difference to the intention of Charles and Ray Eames who welcome the idea of cheap, mass-produced furniture, Bellmann saw it as the opportunity to realize his formal and esthetic approach towards furniture design. His aim was elegance, timelessness rather than mass-production. The armrests, delicately shaped, contribute to the organic aesthetic of the Sitwell chair. The base delicately follows the shape of the seat creating a mold to carry the seat’s shell. The seat is upholstered in a high quality natural-wool fabric, with black laquered steel base. The chair is in good vintage condition with few signs of use. You’ll be able to find the sofa of this series as well in our store front page as well.
