Pair of armchairs, mahogany, reupholstered in Pierre Frey mohair, Europe, 1930s
These 1930s Art Deco armchairs exhibit a low-slung profile with a rectangular base that firmly grounds the piece, and broad, boxy cushions that define the seat and backrest. One immediately notices the curvilinear arms, which loop gracefully from the front to the back, softening the otherwise rectilinear silhouette. The arms’ thickness tapers subtly as they merge with the base. The backrest’s slight recline and the generous depth of the seat further emphasize comfort. The upholstery, an ocher yellow mohair by Pierre Frey, complements the warm mahogany tones. Each line and curve suggests an elegant compromise: sturdy yet graceful, geometric yet fluid, a harmony of opposites that defines their quiet sophistication.
