A Pair of Art Deco Style Curved-Back Lounge Chairs

About the Item

This pair of Hungarian armchairs was produced in 1960’s Budapest in the manner of French Art Deco. The stylishly curved yoke-shaped backs are finished in high-polish macassar veneer. The legs are carved from solid walnuts, with a very dark stain. The seating surfaces have been upholstered in a light cream chenille. Hungarian furniture makers mastered the art of making veneered furniture as early as the Biedermeier period (early 1800's). They thrived through the interwar period, perfecting streamlined Art Deco designs, which mostly originated in France. These postwar replicas have been extensively restored, with new veneer on the backs and new cushions and upholstery. Their unique design makes it unusually easy to blend into modern interior designs. They can also be use as corner chairs.
