Rare pair of lounge chairs by Mini Boga for Taaru, India ca. 1960

About the Item

Very rare modernist lounge chairs designed by Mini Boga for Taaru, produced in India ca. 1960. The chunky construction is made out of solid teak with the original rope upholstery. Both seats are partly restored following the original graphic pattern, the backrests are still fully original. Luckily we were able the reuse the original rope on all the visible parts of the seats. Some new parts of rope were used on the underside of the seats, see pictures. The solid teak wooden frames are unrestored and obtained a beautiful patina over the years. This is the only matching and original set of this model that you will find on the internet. Both chairs are brand stamped by the maker on the back of each chair. True Indian, Delhi modern design. Pre restoration pictures are available. Mini Boga, born in 1932. Established her furniture brand Taaru in New Delhi at a time when there was little modern design in India. Her simple forms are solid and have a softness and grace similar to contemporaneous Brazilian design. Inspired by craft traditions, her designs take on a functionalist and minimalist approach.
