Pair of lounge chair, wood, velvet, Denmark, 1950s
These 1950s Danish modern chairs present a form that feels simultaneously grounded and buoyant. The backrests curve in a continuous, generous arc, cradling the sitter. The tapering, splayed legs, in dark wood, anchor the chairs visually while giving them a poised lightness. The armrests break from the upholstered continuity: sleek, dark wooden projections that seem to float forward. Their pointed, elongated form is a deliberate counterpoint to the chairs’ otherwise soft, swollen volumes. The seats are defined by a contrasting cushion in red, which interrupts the golden body with a deliberate color break, enhancing the composition’s layered quality.
