About the Item

Sculptural Brutalist Lounge Chair in Blond Oak, France, 1960s — 12 Available These sculptural lounge chairs, crafted in France during the 1960s, are striking examples of Brutalist design blended with the warmth of natural materials. Made from solid blond oak, each chair features a bold architectural silhouette with sharply angled legs and carved slatted seats that echo a handcrafted, almost totemic aesthetic. The defining element is the unique dual-slat backrest, sculpted with abstract cut-outs that create a sense of rhythm and negative space. This design not only adds visual interest but also enhances comfort and support. The craftsmanship is robust and honest, with visible joints and grain patterns that highlight the character of the blond oak wood, which has developed a beautiful golden patina over time. Rooted in the Brutalist and Alpine modern tradition, these chairs feel at once grounded and artistic, reminiscent of designers like Charlotte Perriand and the rustic-modern styles of mid-century French mountain interiors. We currently have 12 chairs available, and they are priced individually. Whether used as lounge seating in a contemporary living space, a rustic retreat, or mixed into a more eclectic interior, these chairs make a powerful statement through form, material, and heritage. In very good vintage condition with minor signs of age, each chair has been well preserved and remains sturdy and comfortable. Scandinavian Brutalist Oak rocking Chair, Scandinavia 1970s
Located in Utrecht, NL
While they play a prominent role in both architecture and pop culture, rocking chairs solidified their place in Scandinavian design history as well. As this model proves, functionality can manifest in many forms, but it is always accompanied by expert craftsmanship and a great aesthetic quality. The Brutalist style of design - the term derives from the French word brut, meaning “raw” – is characterized by a deliberate plainness and crudity, and emerged in the mid-20th century and gained popularity in the late 1950s and 1960s. In furniture and décor, the Brutalist movement was somber, giving importance to eerie organic and rugged shapes in earthy tones. The defining characteristics of Brutalist furniture design...
