Set of Two Florence Knoll Armchairs in Original Blue Upholstery, USA 1950s

About the Item

Florence Knoll’s designs are known for their clean lines and timeless appeal. This pair of mid-century armchairs embodies her philosophy of functional elegance. With their balanced proportions and minimalist aesthetic, these pieces bring sophistication to any interior. Design A striking set from the 1950s, these chairs retain their original deep blue wool upholstery. The structured design, featuring a tufted backrest and generous seat, offers both comfort and style. Supported by a sleek chrome frame, the contrast between the plush fabric and the polished metal enhances their modernist charm. The slightly angled back and armrests create a relaxed yet refined seating experience, while the geometric frame keeps the design crisp and architectural. The solid frame is different from the chairs with a parallel bar frame that were made around the same period which makes this set even rarer. These armchairs are a great example of mid-century craftsmanship. The combination of high-quality materials and a strong, defined silhouette makes them a versatile addition to both contemporary and vintage-inspired spaces. Whether placed in a living area or an office setting, they stand out without overwhelming their surroundings. Condition The chairs have been carefully restored while preserving their authenticity. The original fabric remains in good condition, with only minimal signs of wear. The foam has been renewed for comfort, and the chrome frame has some light patina, consistent with age. Please watch the video for a more accurate representation of the colors and details, as it sometimes offers a clearer view than the photos.

Florence Knoll for Knoll International Lounge Chair in Teak
By Knoll, Florence Knoll
Located in Waalwijk, NL
Florence Knoll for Knoll International, lounge chair, model '51', teak, fabric, United States, 1955 This slipper chair model 51 is designed by Florence Knoll. The teak frame of the chair is sleek in form. The angled seat is placed upon the squared-off frame. Maximum seating comfort is ensured by the wide seat and tilted backrest. Florence Knoll (1917-) was trained as an architect and had a sense of style from a very young age. In 1936 she met Alvar Aalto and was trained by Marcel Breuer, Walter Gropius and Mies van der Rohe. This meant that although she was barely out of her teens, she was educated by the best of the European modernists. When she arrived in New York Knoll worked on interior projects (being the only female) which is how she came to know Hans Knoll. When Florence joined Knoll, the planning unit started. Florence also made sure that the designs where more 'American Modernist' instead of Scandinavian, When Hans Knoll died she...
