Solid Rosewood Armchairs by Brazilian company Casulo, 1960s
About the Item
These armchairs, designed by the Brazilian company Casulo in the 1960s, are made of a solid rosewood base with beautiful grains. Nine pieces of wood connected to each other form the necessary weave for the structure alongside the upholstery base and two independent rectangular cushions rest on the seat and back of the armchairs.
Casulo remains one of Brazilian design’s most intriguing mysteries. Beyond a few surviving references and images, little is known about the company or its creators. Yet, even with sparse documentation, we have identified and cataloged several remarkable pieces.
Their designs reveal a deep understanding of both form and functionality, suggesting the work of skilled craftsmen. Casulo’s anonymity underscores the broader challenge of preserving the stories of smaller manufacturers that contributed to Brazil’s rich design history. At Bossa, our ongoing research seeks to uncover more about Casulo, with the hope that future discoveries will bring clarity to its role in Brazilian modernism.
The Armchairs were both fully restored and are in great condition, with new upholstery made from our bespoke Bossa Fabrics collection.
