About the Item

This elegant pair of lounge chairs is an interesting bridge between the 20th century’s earlier artistic movements like Art Deco, and the modernist movement that was about to shape most of Europe’s furniture design for the coming decades. Inspired by the conspicuous curves and artistic use of wood that often defined Art Deco furniture, these chairs illustrate the perfect alliance of geometry and function combined with the world renowned craftsmanship and material choices of Modernism. Since these chairs carry design elements from Art Deco as well as early mid-century modernism, they have a unique and immediately recognizable look. Dominated by the heavily curved arms, the chairs have beautiful, almost sculptural structures that evoke the high-end craftsmanship of both design movements. Each chair features a reclined rectangular back over a deep seat. The thick seat cushions and button tufted backs further contribute to the comfort and cosiness. Still, the arms are in the focus of the design, with a highly distinctive shape and form in the front. The dark-toned upholstery complements the structure’s individuality. Resting on square shaped front legs and slightly splayed hind legs, the high level of sitting comfort is also supported structurally. Strengthening the transition into a more minimalistic modern aesthetic even further, these chairs don’t have any embellishment, rather, the elegant upholstery and the beauty of the wood take on a decorative role. The design brings together the best of two style movements, resulting in a look that is, and will remain timeless. Condition: In good vintage condition. Wear consistent with age and use. The chairs have been reupholstered recently in a premium velour fabric. Each of our items can be re-upholstered by our in-house atelier in a fabric of choice. Please reach out for more information. European Mid-Century Modern Upholstered Lounge Chairs, Europe, circa 1950s
Located in Utrecht, NL
Mid-Century Modern, a design movement devoted to timeless functionalism established itself in the post-war period with furniture that appealed to the senses. Furniture design was guided by the famous maxim: “Form follows function.” For midcentury designers, materials were used for their own distinct; often a piece of furniture would combine only two materials or colours – creating tension and harmony without fuss or superfluous ornament and these fully upholstered lounge chairs are perfect examples of this sentiment. The duality of two materials and colour scheme create an elegant, self-supporting, and enticingly functional design. The combination of solid wood and high-quality upholstery is traditional in mid-century design for a good reason. The two materials complement each other by highlighting their unique material qualities. This pair falls into the category of the so-called biomorphic midcentury: furniture that relished in organic, curved, smooth surfaces, design that was moulded into the shapes of natural occurrences, and which was a lively contrast to the more austere machine aesthetic...

Italian Modern Upholstered Armchairs with Tapered Feet, Italy, circa 1950s
Located in Utrecht, NL
The Mid-Century Modern era is notable for its blending of Classic modern design elements with a slightly more updated feel. This beautiful pair of Italia lounge chairs has a Classic, comfortable style that is a prime example of the best qualities of what is referred to as Modernism in European design. Several key factors define the Italian approach to design: respect for craftsmanship, quality materials and finally, an elegant, high-end look. Upholstered cabinetmaker chairs may seem similar at first sight; however, each model’s individuality becomes evident upon closer inspection. In these chairs’ case, their thick, welcoming shape and the sleek, tapered wooden feet Stand out immediately. The design has achieved a perfect balance between form and function, in which aesthetics and utility come together in a purely Mid-Century Modern manner. The fully upholstered wooden frames rest on dark lacquered wood legs. The feet are splayed to support stability, while their stylish dark colour contrast to the elegant, light upholstery. The backs are relatively low, enhancing the stylish look along with the thick arms, backs, and seat cushions. Together these design elements create a modern look with the beloved organic, curvy aesthetic. The exceptionally soft, textured fabric highlights the bodies’ rounded edges and sheer volume. Italy was especially passionate about furniture and product design during the mid-century, an area where the country remained faithful to a figurative repertoire of substantial classicism, while not disdaining impulses of authentic modernity. As a result, Italian modern furniture...

European Upholstered Art Deco Lounge Chairs, Europe 1930s
Located in Utrecht, NL
In the design-wise glamorous world of 1930s Europe, exceptional seating pieces emerged and still embody Art Deco elegance. These lounge chairs, with their distinctive features, exude the spirit of the era and remain stylish examples of this influential design movement. The most striking aspect of these chairs is their characteristic, scalloped backs, which add a touch of opulence and Art Deco flair. With their symmetrical, curved lines, these type of backs were hallmarks of Art Deco furniture design, epitomizing the aesthetic of the period. The large, enveloping backrests dictate the shape of these chairs, as they visually form most of the structure. Similarly to club chairs - that are favourites for Art Deco enthusiasts - these chairs’ arms constitute a single piece with the backs resulting in a wide design profile. The chairs feature fully upholstered bodies, embracing the era’s ruling principle of luxurious comfort without sacrificing style. The upholstery has a rich green texture with multicoloured, curly strands that add a tactile dimension to the design. This tactile quality was characteristic of Art Deco design, as designers of the time were keen on exploring different materials and textures to create visually stunning and sensorially pleasing pieces. The well-chosen material thus cleverly highlights the curves and creates extra depth. The chairs' solid wood legs provide gentle contrast to the textile, while also providing a sense of stability and durability, ensuring that this pair will keep standing the test of time. Art Deco design often incorporated geometric and angular elements, however, in these lounge chairs, there is a harmonious blend of curves and straight lines, resulting in a balanced and inviting aesthetic. With their scalloped backs, symmetrical curves, green upholstery, and rich texture, this pair represents some of the best qualities of Art Deco era furniture...
