About the Item

William Spratling (1900 - 1967) was an American silver designer and artist, known as the reformer and main innovator of Mexican silver industry. Born in New York, Spratling studied architectur in the Alabama Polytechnic Institute (currently Auburn University). He studied Mexican architecture in the Summer School of the Nacional University of Mexico (UNAM). In 1931, moved by the changing situation in Mexico, he established in Taxco, a mining city that lacked a silverworking industry. With the help of many Mexican silversmiths, Spratling established the new style of Mexican jewelry and silver with Pre-Columbian informed designs that became very popular.
