About the Item

A Rare Fauteuil de Bureau In the Louis XV Style By François Linke An armchair of beautifully drawn proportions, constructed from purpleheart and adorned with fine hand-chased and fire-gilded bronze mounts, the upholstered shaped backrest surmounted by a bearded ormolu mask, the open scrolled armrests meeting the padded seat, the chair standing on curved cabriole legs with ormolu foliate cast sabots and dressed with stylised ormolu acanthus to the knees, one of which is signed 'F. Linke.' French, circa 1905 Dimensions: H: 38.5 in / 98 cm W: 27.5 in / 70 cm D: 23.5 in / 60 cm According to Christopher Payne, furniture historian and author of the definitive volume on François Linke, this armchair is a variation of index no. 840 & no. 1333. Both iterations are based on the same frame design and were finished with varying ormolu mounts. A Regency Period Klismos armchair In the manner of Thomas Hope Carved from oak, with the typical Klismos construction having sabre back legs, the tapering front legs turned and reeded with baluster capitals; the swooping and curved studded toprail above a scrolling anthemion-carved crossbar; the straight armrests with applied anthemion terminals held by distinctive leopard head supports flanking the caned seat.
