About the Item

Handmade pouf or side table designed and handmade by Ivan Schlechter at his own workshop in the mid 1960s. The pouf is upholstered in thick natural canvas, features a handle and is hand sewn. The design is simple and functional typical for Danish design in this period. Schlechter made several variations of this design through the years in different materials. Manufactured by "Ny Bolig" in the 1960s. Ivan Schlechter (1918-2018) was an important Danish craftsman. He trained as an upholsterer when he was just 14 years old and spent almost 85 years working in the field. His eminent skills as an upholsterer, mostly working with leather, made him a central figure in the history of Danish modern design. As industrialisation progressed, Schlechter focused on preserving the quality and aesthetics of handmade furniture, believing that the integrity of craftsmanship could not be replaced by mass production: “A piece of furniture is about respect – for the materials, the craftsmanship and the user”. In 1951, Schlechter established his own workshop, where he worked in close collaboration with prominent Danish architects such as Mogens Koch and Hans J. Wegner. One of his most fruitful partnerships was with architect Poul Kjærholm and his longtime associate E. Kold Christensen. This became a beautiful partnership, where both parties were equally passionate and particular about leather, favouring vegetable-tanned leather for its natural qualities and ability to beautifully patinate. Schlechter was likewise involved in the making of the iconic Chieftan chair designed by Finn Juhl and made by cabinetmaker Niels Vodder, which stands as a testament to his impeccable understanding of leatherwork.

Lounge Chairs by Illums Bolighus Danish Art Weaving, Copenhagen, Denmark, 1950s
By Kerstin Horlin Holmquist, Illums Bolighus
Located in Odense, DK
Amazing pair of lounge chairs made for "Illums Bolighus", Copenhagen in the 1950s. Unknown designer but sometimes ascribed to Swedish designer Kerstin Hörlin-Holmquist. The chairs are made from stained beech and have been reupholstered and hand sewn in chunky "Mcnutt" wool fabric from "Danish Art Weaving". One chair with original metal plaquette from Illums. The chairs were created for Illums Bolighus, which was originally founded in 1925 under the name of BO by Danish entrepreneur Kaj Dessau. Working with his artistic consultant Brita Drewsen, he created a concept that had never been seen before: a store with arranged and furnished interiors, where textiles, appointments, and furniture all interacted as art. The exceptional foresight displayed by both Drewsen and Dessau, as well as their impeccable sense of style and quality, played an important role in the international acclaim long accorded to Danish interior...
