Early 19th Century Antique Anglo Indian Caned Seat Settee in Carved Ebony
About the Item
An early 19th century Anglo Indian caned seat settee (with down filled cushion) in extensively carved solid ebony from the British colony of Ceylon (Sri Lanka today). The exceptional craftsmanship of these Indian makers was heavily influenced by Tudor and Elizabethan furniture of the 16th and 17th centuries and was famously displayed alongside such original English antiques at the Ceylon Court of the 1862 London Exhibition. Identical examples of rare ebony chairs with carved panels and bearing this distinctive rope twist arm are on display at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, and the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, MA.
Without the cushion, the seat height is 18". The current down filled cushion is very lofted by sight, adding on about 3" seat height visually, but compresses to make the seat height about 19" when sat upon.
