Rare and Unusual French Regence Period Carved Oak Metamorphic Marquise

About the Item

A rare and unusual French Regence period oak metamorphic marquise, the arched rectangular back and scrolled ears hinged opening to form a bed, over scrolled arms and a scalloped apron, raised on cabriole legs. This is a rare form of French furniture in an attractive and useful size. The Regence period in France, between 1715 and 1723, was a significant era in French history. It was marked by the regency of Philippe II, Duke of Orleans, for the young King Louis XV, and the return of the court from Versailles to Paris. This period saw a shift in political and cultural life, with Paris becoming a center of political and intellectual activity. The term "marquise" in French seat furniture is a wide armchair, larger than a typical armchair designed for 2 people to sit intimately. Circa 1730.
