About the Item

Designed by Bernard Holdaway for Hull Traders during Shirley Craven’s tenure, this 1960s chair was created as an affordable furniture solution for low-income families. Constructed from industrial cardboard with a durable enamel-painted finish, it was intended to be lightweight, inexpensive, and even disposable. Due to its ephemeral nature, very few examples have survived, making it a rare piece today. Its bold circular form, integrated curved backrest, and distinctive cut-out detail highlight the innovative and experimental approach of Hull Traders during this period. A unique example of British modernist design and social history.
