Antique Pair of Figural Heavily Carved Oak Sgabello Chairs Italy

About the Item

Antique Pair of Figural Heavily Carved Walnut Sgabello Chairs with Baroque Motifs, 18th–19th Century A stunning pair of figural sgabello chairs, intricately carved from rich walnut and dating from the late 18th to early 19th century. These sculptural chairs exemplify the grandeur and drama of the Baroque style, with elaborate detail throughout and a bold silhouette that commands attention. Each chair features a pierced and ornate backrest crowned by a flowing crest, centered around floral scrollwork and flanked by delicate winged figures—possibly cherubs or allegorical representations—adding a sense of movement and mythic charm. The craftsmanship is deep and precise, with high relief carving that catches the light beautifully. The seats rest on sharply splayed front legs, each adorned with openwork scroll motifs and voluted feet, while the rear legs are solid and curvaceous, evoking a stylized Gothic form. Though not designed for everyday use, sgabelli such as these were intended as ceremonial or hall chairs—decorative symbols of wealth and taste in noble or ecclesiastical interiors. These chairs would make a dramatic statement in a grand entryway, flanking a console or fireplace, or anchoring a luxurious living or study space. Dimensions: Height: 94 cm (37 in.)
