About the Item

This slipper chair features a tall, curved backrest evocative of a violin with its legs echoing these curves in black lacquer with gilt highlights. While Thierry Despont (1948 - 2023) was best-known for his architectural practice—for his integral role in the restoration of the Statue of Liberty, his re-imagining of the Ritz in Paris, and the interiors of the Getty Center (as well as for his notable private clients like Bill Gates and Calvin)—he was also an accomplished painter, sculptor, author, and furniture maker. In his furnishings, often made as one-offs or in small editions, there can be seen evidence of his encyclopedic knowledge of design. He drew inspiration from (and often improved upon) a wide variety of elegant or ingenious works by the many historically important furniture makers he revered.

By Jean-Luc Le Mounier
Located in New York, NY
From his Empreinte Collection, a series of pieces centered around a theme of destruction and reconstruction, these chairs are composed of patinated bronze cast from broken and burned wooden planks. Fine, light, and comfortable (feats unto themselves when it comes bronze), these pieces are nevertheless characteristic of the attention Le Mounier pays to the smallest of details. The Brittany-based designer, artist, and furniture maker Jean-Luc Le Mounier has been acquainted with the world of craftsmanship since his childhood, a large part of which was spent in the workshop of his grandfather, a carpenter. “Already when I was very young,” says Le Mounier, “I was passionate about building objects, I made miniature wooden...
