Early 1800’s Three Slat, Pennsylvania Ladder-Back Chair

About the Item

This three-slat ladder-back chair was most likely made in Pennsylvania in the early 1800’s. From the design, artisan verge markings on the legs and shape and characteristics of the finials, this chair was more than likely a farm house chair. Chairs of this type and era were made utilizing a time honored method where the legs and stretchers were made smooth and round on the shaving horse; the three slats for the back were finished and bent to the proper concave curve; holes for stretchers were bored in the short front legs and longer back ones and mortices were cut in the latter for the ends of the slats. You’ll notice that each leg still has verge marks made by the artisan/craftsman, indicating the various points for joining the various pieces together. The proportions of this chair are well balanced and stout with a substantial single-orb finial that sits high on a double turned base that flows down into the back leg. All four legs terminate with a coved foot. A beautiful piece for a farm or French country design concept.

If these two chairs could speak, the history they might share. These rare and very early chairs are hand-carved and constructed in a refined primitive country design, reflective of the era. Utilizing a stunning, rich maple, the top rails and cross rails flow with ribbon designs for a touch of elegance. The backs of these chairs are more delicate than others of this period and style. Higher, thinner rails and styles found in these chair backs, mixed with the heavy squared legs and wide band stretchers make these an impressive example of an Early American country chair...
