About the Item

ABOUT The Spaghetti Armchair is a modern, iconic piece of furniture designed by Giandomenico Belotti for the brand Alias. Introduced in 1980, this chair is named for its distinctive use of thin, PVC strings that resemble strands of spaghetti. These flexible cords are tightly stretched across the frame to form the seat and backrest, providing a surprisingly comfortable and supportive sitting experience. The frame itself is typically made of steel, giving the chair a minimalist and industrial look. Its lightweight, stackable design makes it a functional choice for both indoor and outdoor use. Sold as a set of six only. CREATOR Giandomenico Belotti for the brand Alias. Made in Italy. DATE OF MANUFACTURE c.1980. MATERIALS AND TECHNIQUES PVC, Steel. CONDITION Good. Minor wear consistent with use and wear. All strands are intact. Minor scuffs and wear on each chair's frame. One chair is slightly bent denoted in photos. DIMENSIONS H 32 in. W 21.25 in. D 19 in. Seat Height 17.5 in. HISTORY Originally owned by William Bayer, an American novelist, who is the author of twenty-one books including The New York Times best-sellers Switch and Pattern Crimes. Giandomenico Belotti (1922–2004) was an architect and industrial designer. After studying in Venice and Milan, he worked on restoration and urban projects before turning to furniture design. The Spaghetti Chair has earned its place in the MoMA (NY), Triennale Milano, and Vitra Design Museum collections.
