About the Item

A remarkable and museum-worthy pair of extremely rare and attractive Jacobean carved oak chairs in lovely antique condition. Most likely made in England in the late-Jacobean period around 1620, this delightful and versatile pair make great hallway, occasional or dining chairs and will enhance any interior with their richly aged oak colouring, wonderfully decorative appeal and mouth-watering, historic charm. Reassuringly heavy and made from solid oak, this charming pair resided in a Derbyshire Manor House for as long as the family records stretched, possibly all the way back to their creation, and they most likely started out as ornate, locally crafted dining chairs. Traditionally crafted, this stunning pair features very interesting, delightfully ornate and wonderfully primitive floral and other carvings set within borders. The vase-shaped back-splats are decorated with a multi-perspective rising flower with a central rose motif. The seat fronts and side aprons have lovely foliage and floral carvings and the back flanks have scalloped carvings, with foliage and ‘X’ carvings are interspersed throughout. They have beautiful cabriole front legs above lovely pad feet, plank seats, splendidly shapely backs vase-shaped yoke back splats, superbly joined, turned stretchers and display wonderfully aged, rich colouring to the oak wood. All in all this is a wonderful and extremely eye-catching and interesting pair of rare and versatile Jacobean carved chairs with bundles of centuries-old charm. CONDITION These are in very good antique condition. Structurally sound and sturdy, they have to-be-expected minor cosmetic marks and bumps, as you’d expect for a pair of their considerable age, which only adds to their appeal. There are a few historic wormholes to the feet and legs and they have been treated all over for good measure. Some parts may be later additions, (possibly the front legs, seat planks or stretcher joins) and there are hard-to-notice signs of historic structural repairs. Overall they’re a fantastic and rare pair of English antique beauties in lovely antique condition and if well looked after should remain so for many more generations and even centuries to come – please see the photos.
