Pair of Circa 1940 Charles Dudouyt Style French Low Chairs in Carved Beech

About the Item

With a seat height of under 10 inches, this pair of carved low chairs would make a wonderful addition to a sitting area in front of a fireplace. The distinctive look of these French chairs, which date to circa 1940, is in the style of Charles Dudouyt. Dudouyt (1885-1946) was a French woodworker whose designs incorporated minimal carvings and natural materials. These particular chairs were hand-carved from beech, with lattice-like woven seats. Most of the rails and stretcher connectors are cylindrical, except for the two backrest rails, which are flattened with arching tops. All four legs have been carved with a few protruding rings, with the back legs rising higher. Our Dudouyt-style low chairs would make intriguing seating for an entry hall, landing, or library.

Pair of French Louis XVI Style Silvered Bronze Chenets, circa 1900
Located in Dallas, TX
This pair of brightly silvered bronze chenets are from France (circa 1900), in the style of Louis XVI, as noted by the presence of laurel leaf festoons and pots au feu finials. They were used in well-appointed homes, not only to decorate the front of the fireplace, but to prevent burning logs from rolling onto priceless rugs, should they break free of the fire. Often seen in natural wrought iron, or gilded in gold (in finer homes), it is unusual to see them in silvered bronze. Each finial has two pots au feu of different sizes and orientation adorned with a laurel swag. The larger fire pot...
