African Luba Caryatid Stool
About the Item
This stool by the Luba people of Zaire is indicative of their classic style. A single tree trunk was carved into a column, then further taken in until the robust figure of a woman appears. She supports the circular seat, representing the foundational support provided by women and embodying the marks of Luba identity. A beautifully formed storied sculpture, this stool represents centuries of tribal culture.

Located in Chicago, IL

While some ceremonial stools are carved to convey particular proverbs, this stool is simply decorated with scalloped edges, geometric patterns, and a small cross. The combination of shapes and curved lines makes this Ashanti stool...
