About the Item

Designed by Mexican architect Aurelio Martinez Flores, the Banco Guarujá (1972) distills the essence of his work: minimalist lines, carefully studied proportions, and a formal clarity achieved through the use of just eight cylindrical rods. The result is a piece that reflects the purity and lightness characteristic of Aurelio’s creations. Relaunched in 2024 by Galeria Apartamento 61, this first edition of the Banco Guarujá faithfully follows the original specifications. This version is handcrafted from solid canela wood with a natural finish, with precise carpentry work ensuring the same proportions as the 1972 model. Individually numbered, every piece is completed with a handwoven kraft paper seat featuring geometric patterns, just as Martinez Flores originally envisioned. Although originally conceived as a stool, the Banco Guarujá also functions beautifully as a side table or sculptural catchall. With its generous dimensions and striking presence, it serves equally well as a functional object or a centerpiece in a room. Historically, the Banco Guarujá was produced in very limited numbers, appearing in select architectural projects by the designer, such as the Zaragoza Residence in Guarujá (1972) and the Instituto Moreira Salles headquarters in Poços de Caldas (1992), where a version with a leather seat was used. Shipping is complimentary to the continental United States and Europe.
