Early 19th Century Chinese Burled Top Feng Deng Stool

This early 19th century Chinese stool features a burled linden top with a richly swirled grain. A single burl of linden was hand-carved to create the stacked design of the sides and seat. The stool has round splayed legs and a texture that calls to be touched, achieved through hundreds of years of use. The feng deng form, which translates literally to "square stool" was popular for its simplicity and utility in the home. This feng deng was acquired from a collector who is keenly attentive to the way unusual timbers and form come together in exceptional ways.
