About the Item
This is an old Japanese primitive-style stool, crafted during the Meiji period (1860s–1900s).
It exudes a simple yet powerful presence. The material is robust chestnut wood, and what is truly remarkable is that the legs were carved from a single piece of wood without any joints. The form captures the raw vitality of nature, creating a design that is both simple and overwhelmingly compelling.
In my more than 20 years as a buyer, I can hardly recall encountering a stool as captivating as this. The surface bears traces of careful repairs and long-term use, revealing not just age, but a beauty that has been elevated through time. The seat still shows the marks of handcrafting, enriched by a deep luster and smoothness developed over generations of use—qualities that make this piece truly unique.
Its condition is also excellent. There are no signs of insect damage, no wobbling, and it can still be used with confidence as a functional piece of furniture today. Please note, however, that as shown in the photos, the seat has a natural tilt. Rather than a flaw, this asymmetry enhances its presence, embodying the Japanese aesthetic of wabi-sabi.
A stool imbued with Japanese sensibility, it carries the strength of its material and the refined character cultivated through the passage of time. A piece to be admired, lived with, and appreciated.
Seat dimensions: approx. 330mm × 250mm
Weight: 4.5 kg

Our Philosophy
Objects always tell the truth.
All I can do is just to face with them sincerely and give
them deep affection as much as I can.
There is no boundary of nationalities and of eras in beauty.
But I think now is the time we choose 'Japanese style' and it
will be the best way to remind us of what we are losing
today and to question us about an essence of beauty again.
I hope that you can touch the memories which the objects here have,
feel and think of something invisible but exists undoubtedly.
