Mid-Century 1950 Vintage Carlo Mollino Stools from Lutrario Hall

About the Item

Carlo Mollino was an Italian architect, designer, and photographer known for his eclectic style and visionary approach. Born in Turin in 1905, he created interiors and furniture that combined elegance, innovation, and surrealist flair. His pieces—often one-of-a-kind—reflect a deep interest in craftsmanship, organic forms, and expressive design. Beyond furniture, Mollino explored photography, writing, and aviation, making him a truly multidisciplinary figure. Today, his work is celebrated as a key chapter in 20th-century Italian design. His independent wealth allowed him to pick and choose projects, resulting in an oeuvre of unique, often site-specific works and never manufactured for the general public. In the 1950’s, he began to use new materials like vinyl and enameled steel and took a modernist turn in his designs. For the Lutrario Ballroom, a famous dancing in Turin, Italy, he designed this set of stool with specific attention to the structure supporting the seat. Literature: F.&N. Ferrari, Phaidon (ed.), The furniture of Carlo Mollino, New York 2011, fig. 272. E. Tamagno,Testo & Immagine (ed.), Carlo Mollino. Esuberanze soft, Torino 1996, p. 78.
