About the Item

Carved in quiet reverence from solid French oak, this pair of benches exudes pastoral strength and monastic simplicity. Each seat is cut from a single plank, the grain running fluidly from end to end, terminating in gently rounded edges that soften their visual austerity. The silhouette is reduced to its essence—two volute-shaped legs rising from shoe-foot bases, joined invisibly with hand-cut mortise joints. Attributed to a regional atelier working in the vernacular tradition, these benches resonate with the ethos of French country craftsmanship in the 1940s, when rural forms were preserved amid modern upheaval. Their design draws from the lineage of ecclesiastical seating and refectory furniture, yet retains a lightness of line that renders them contemporary. Executed entirely in oak, their surfaces are left open-pored and matte, offering a tactile reading of the wood’s natural rhythm—from medullary rays to subtle knots. The craftsmanship is sober and strong, with dovetail keys and pegged construction lending both visual and structural integrity. Wear consistent with age and use. Meticulously preserved by Jada to maintain structural integrity while honoring their original patina. With their linear grace and sculptural restraint, these benches offer architectural balance within a dining room, entryway, or along a gallery wall. Available for private acquisition. Inquiries from discerning collectors are welcome.
